After leaving school aged 16, Tommy Young joined Thames & Newcastle as an apprentice architectural joiner. Now studying towards a Level 2 qualification in Carpentry and Joinery at New City College, he’s laying the foundations for a successful career in a high-demand area of construction.
Here, he shares more about his journey so far.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
As someone who’s eager to learn, I decided to start an apprenticeship straight after leaving school. I really liked the idea of working while continuing my education. I chose architectural joinery because of the variety of projects it offers.
What does your training involve?
I spend four days a week in the workshop at Thames & Newcastle. I work alongside two joiners and the workshop manager who are teaching me a wide range of skills. I’m already fully trained in how to use specialist machinery and tools. I also know how to assemble and create units from technical drawings. This hands-on learning is complemented by one day a week at college, where I’m strengthening my knowledge and practical skills.
What are you enjoying most about your apprenticeship / working for T&N?
The most enjoyable part of my apprenticeship is learning new skills that will benefit me long term. I’m constantly gaining new knowledge and receiving great support from the Thames & Newcastle team.
After completing your apprenticeship, what are your career goals?
Once I complete my apprenticeship, I want to continue expanding my knowledge and skills in architectural joinery. I’m confident this experience will set me up for a bright future in the trade.
What would you say to others thinking about an apprenticeship in construction?
I would 100 per cent recommend an apprenticeship in construction. Not only will you gain valuable skills in a trade, but the chance to work alongside experienced tradespeople who further enhance your learning and career prospects.
