THAMES & NEWCASTLE TRANSFORMS ALFRESCO BAR IN CANARY WHARF

Thames & Newcastle has completed the transformation of an outdoor bar in the heart of London’s Canary Wharf.

The fast-track project has replaced the Grandstand Bar located opposite One Canada Square.

Working in partnership with client Grandstand Events, and architects Givanni Associates, Thames & Newcastle helped to finalise the bar’s intricate design ahead of the construction programme.

The two-tiered structure was built with a steel frame and features curved cladding at both ends, sliding glass doors and high-end floor and wall finishes. The top floor, which is accessed via two curved staircases, adds another alfresco space extending the bar’s views of the park.

To provide flexibility for different events within the venue, the 18m downstairs bar is movable which demanded a complex mechanical and electrical package. All services were installed to accommodate the bar’s different positions and so they can be hidden when required through access hatches in the floor.

Located above Canada Wharf shopping centre and in a busy public area surrounded by other shops, restaurants and bars, the site presented many logistical challenges for Thames & Newcastle. The team had to adhere to stringent loading requirements, particularly when installing the steel frame, and liaised with several stakeholders to minimise any potential disruption.

Daniel Ford, Construction Director at Thames & Newcastle, said: “Stringent communication and logistical planning were vital for this project. The delivery of the steel frame and other large components was very carefully managed and completed as quickly as possible.

“We called on the skills of our key trades and specialist sub-contractors to construct the new bar which has been designed to offer a luxurious, high-end finish with art-deco inspired interiors. A lot of the steelwork is exposed so attention to detail was paramount to meet the design brief.”

The transformed venue is named Oasis Bar & Terrace and opened its doors on 18 June 2024.
